Gaoyi Ridge sits where red sandstone meets open water, a stretch of Danxia landform on Chenzhou’s southern edge that rewards a slower, dedicated visit rather than a stop on a longer itinerary. Our full Chenzhou city guide covers Gaoyi Ridge in brief alongside Xiaodongjiang and Mangshan; this guide goes deeper into the trails themselves — where the ridge walk gets narrow, which viewpoint earns the climb, and what to wear on the plank sections.

A Danxia landscape shaped by water, not just wind

The red cliffs here belong to the same family of landform as China’s better-known Danxia sites: iron-rich sandstone laid down over millions of years, then carved into sharp ridges and flats by water erosion rather than the rounder shapes wind alone tends to leave. What sets Gaoyi Ridge apart from a typical Danxia overlook is the water sitting right against the rock. A lake fills the low ground beneath several of the ridgelines, so the red stone drops almost straight into green water instead of a valley floor, which is why the photographs from here look more dramatic than the ticket price suggests they should.
The five spots that make up a full visit

Gaoyi Ridge isn’t one single trail. It’s a cluster of named features connected by paths of varying difficulty, and most visitors pick a route through three or four of them rather than all five in one trip.
Giant Lizard Ridge (高椅岭巨蜥) — the formation that gives the area its reputation online: a long, narrow spine of red rock that photographs well from a distance and up close. It’s also one of the more exposed sections, so it’s worth doing early in the visit while legs are fresh.
Golden Tortoise Lake (金龟湖) — a plank walkway runs along a ridge here with a cliff drop on one side and the lake on the other. This is the section locals and reviewers flag most often for caution; the path is narrow enough that passing another group means someone steps carefully to the inside.
Beauty’s Terrace (美女坦) — a broad, flatter outcrop that works as a rest point and a wide-angle photo spot, with less exposure than the ridge sections nearby.
Sky Ladder (天梯) — a steep run of steps and rock-cut footholds that connects the lower loop to the higher ground. Treat it as a short, sharp climb rather than a stroll.
Yanggunao (羊古脑) — the highest point most visitors reach, with a view back across the red ridgelines, the lake, and the farmland beyond. It’s the payoff viewpoint and the spot to budget extra time for.
Best light, best timing
Flat midday sun washes out the color that makes this landscape worth the trip. Late afternoon light rakes across the sandstone and brings out the red and orange tones the ridge is known for, so photographers generally plan to be on the Golden Tortoise Lake walkway or at Yanggunao in the two to three hours before sunset. Overcast days still work for the water reflections around the lake, even if the rock itself looks duller.
Safety on the ridge
Parts of the scenic area are still being developed, and the railings along some ridge and plank sections aren’t a substitute for care. Wear flat, slip-resistant shoes — the sandstone turns slick when damp, and sandals or smooth soles aren’t a good match for the plank walkway. Keep umbrellas closed on the exposed sections; the wind along the ridge can catch one off guard. If you’re visiting with children, hold hands on the Golden Tortoise Lake walkway and the Sky Ladder specifically — these are the two sections with the least margin for a stumble. Skip the ridge walks entirely if rain has fallen recently or is forecast; wet sandstone is the single biggest risk factor reviewers mention.

Getting there
Gaoyi Ridge sits about 31 kilometers from downtown Chenzhou, roughly a 44-minute drive via Wuling Avenue, Qingnian Avenue, and the Chenzhou–Zixing and Chenzhou–Yongxing roads. Search “高椅岭旅游区” (Gaoyiling Scenic Area) in Baidu Maps or Amap for live, turn-by-turn directions — Google Maps routing is unreliable this far from central Chenzhou.
By bus: routes 501 and 817 both stop at Gaoyiling bus stop, the closest public transit point to the entrance.
From Chenzhou Railway Station: take bus 59, 36, 27, or 21 to Gaosibeier stop, then transfer to bus 501.
From Chenzhou West (high-speed rail) Station: head to the Wanhua bus hub, take bus 201 to Xihe Wetland Park South stop, then transfer to bus 501.
From the long-distance bus station: take bus 867, 813, or 812 to Hongfeng Residential Area, then transfer to 817; or take bus 864 to Cuijiang Village, then transfer to 817.
Planning a visit
Most visitors spend three to four hours covering Giant Lizard Ridge, the Golden Tortoise Lake walkway, and Yanggunao, with Beauty’s Terrace as an easy add-on. Bring water and sun protection; shaded sections are limited once you’re out on the open ridgelines. The scenic area sells tickets at the south gate visitor service center, and discounted rates apply automatically for eligible groups at the counter rather than requiring advance booking. If you’re timing the trip around a national holiday, it’s worth seeing how Liuzhou handles Golden Week crowds for a sense of what a popular scenic area looks like on peak dates.
FAQ
Which bus app should I use to track the transfers in real time?
Baidu Maps (百度地图) and Amap (高德地图) both show live bus positions and will recalculate if you miss a transfer at Gaosibeier or Hongfeng Residential Area — useful here because the 501 and 817 routes run on a gap of twenty minutes or more off-peak. Both apps have English-language modes; search “高椅岭旅游区” or “Gaoyiling Scenic Area” as the destination rather than typing an address.
Do I need ID to claim a student, senior, or disability discount?
Yes. Visitors 70 and older enter free with ID showing their age; active-duty military enter free with a service ID; visitors with a disability enter free with a valid disability certificate. Full-time students (undergraduate level and below) qualify for the half-price rate with a current student ID — note that this excludes adult-education or continuing-education certificates. Discharged veterans don’t qualify for a free ticket at Gaoyi Ridge, which trips up some visitors who assume all military-linked IDs apply.
Is Gaoyi Ridge manageable for someone afraid of heights?
The Golden Tortoise Lake walkway and the final stretch to Yanggunao are the two sections where the exposure is hardest to avoid — both run along open ridgeline with a drop to one side. Beauty’s Terrace and the lower approach paths stay well back from any edge and give a reasonable sense of the landscape without the narrow walkway, so a visitor who wants to skip the exposed sections can still see most of what makes the area distinctive.
Can Gaoyi Ridge and Xiaodongjiang fit into one day?
Both sit within Chenzhou’s southern cluster of attractions, but Gaoyi Ridge’s exposed sections are best tackled with full daylight and steady footing, which pushes most of a visit into the afternoon for the best light. Pairing the two in one day means an early start at one site and accepting rushed time at the other — most visitors who want to do both properly split them across two days instead.
